The collection contains three manuscripts : 2 versions of "Carving a name" and an untitled poem. The collection also contains six letters from Alger to others discussing : his writing; George A. Bacon's "Game of [Portrait] Authors"; the authorship of "Nothing to do" (not his own), and suggesting "Joseph H. Howard" [an apparant composite of the Justin H. Howard (the actual author) and Joseph Howard, Jr. (who published a bogus proclamation)]; the authorship of "Nothing to eat"; and an invitation to write a boys' biography of the winner of the 1884 presidential election. There is also an autobiographical sketch of Alger. Correspondents include George Allen Bacon, a Mr. DeLacy, H[owes?] H[owen?], Harriet Jackson, Porter & Coates, and [William Adolphus Wheeler?].

Joseph Howard's career as a journalist was long and distinguished. As war correpondent for the New York TIMES during the Civil War, he was present at the 1st Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Ball's Bluff. He was arrested and imprisoned for 14 weeks in 1864 as a result of a journalistic burlesque known as the "Bogus Proclamation."
